Craig Sibley | Aftermath

January 15 – February 15, 2015

Opening Reception: Thursday, January 15
6-8 pm

Initial Gallery is pleased to present Aftermath featuring recent work of Vancouver-based sculptor and former owner of Trench Gallery, Craig Sibley. Leaving the gallery, Craig returned to his artist studio to discover what it was that was urging him to again make art. The resultant sculptures, constructed from canvas stretching frames, are a startling encapsulation of aesthetic and philosophical artistic values.

Conspicuously named “impossible paintings”, the constructions have a formal code describing the impossible-ness of an improbability that keeps the artist in practice. A geometry that requires a measure of precision, these constructions of rough pieces of studio scrap are reassembled into clean, hardedge three-dimensional sculptures but the story lies with the discrepancy that the rigid empirical rubric allows before it collapses back into disorder. In homage to the West Coast modernist artists of the 1960s such as Reg Holmes and Gary Lee Nova, Sibley’s work reflects on the dialogue between painting, sculpture the past and the present.
